What is its main purpose? Diesel trucks are designed to pull hard and run for long distance/ run times. They get the best wear, mileage benefits if fired up and driven for several hours.
Are you buying new or used? have a brand preference?

Well I want to be able to tow my boat and put a camper on it a throughout the year, tow my boat quite a bit.  But it will also be my daily drive 30mo/rt. To work.. Also hunting.

I'd wait and see how the new Dodge Ram 1500 diesel performs. It might have the rest of the pack scrambling for a light duty diesel package.

Let's put it this way, I don't plan on ever owning another gas powered rig!  Just remember, real trucks don't have spark plugs!

I drive my PSD daily. About the same commute rural. Tow. Haul stuff. I tell everyone if they plan to tow/haul, there's nothing like a diesel. I had a built 460 in my old truck. It would keep up with a lot of diesels and do the job well, but there is a big difference in the torque that a diesel can provide.

I never owned a diesel pickup, owner semi trucks, until last year. I will never own a gas pot again. Power, torque has a gas truck beat to he//.

I wouldn't even think about putting a camper on one of those and towing a boat. Would be overweight and dangerous. .
 But if you  need  a one ton  I would buy a diesel.

 My concern on that is whether they have a tranny capable of handling the torque longterm.

Well I LOVE my Diesels, they are great work trucks and will pull hard. Find a good used rig IMO or a newer one that you can do th eegr delet kit to. A couple of rigs That i Think are bomb proof That either i own or know people that do. 03-06 Dodge diesels(stick) I currently own 2 of them, OR a F350 with the 7.3L. Stick I know you have to replace the duel mass flywheel but once that is done they are pretty bullet proof.

The 5.7 doesnt have a tranny built to handle anything longterm either. Traded in my 2012 1500 for a 2007 2500 with the 6.7.  In maybe 5 trips of towing my wife's horses around I realized a 1500 is a LIGHT duty pickup. I was towing roughly 5k and it was unpleasant to say the least.
